Site update - Profile informations

Hi,

due to new users unfilled fields, which are kinda important, I have decided to force that or user will not be able to post replies into forums or open a thread and post a shouts.

fields that needs to be filled in order to post are:

- Birthdate
- Country
- Game Name

- Gender

Those are 4 fields which takes few seconds to be filled and are important to us. Warning about that is very noticeable, also on every section that is blocked textareas are red and buttons will not do anything else than display another popup warning.

Update: we have decided to put gender and birth date to optional. Game name and Country will stay mandatory.

Regards, Kwizlord

I think it is pretty useless to force forum members to fill out these fields.

I already wrote some pms to Kwizlord, but he said that I should write it in the forum.

My arguments (against) it are:
1. Some forum members don't want to publish personal infos about them
2. You cannot check if the input is right (By the way: I'm -1 )
3. There are better ways to avoid spam (I read some articles about it and I think it is best to be creative)
4. You don't really need this info, do you?

Suggestions :
- Why not keeping the fields optional and indicate that s.b. has filled them out with an icon ?
- Allow manual "account activation" via PM to an admin

Thanks for the feedback.

My opinion about this:

1. what is so secret? If you're not James Bond....
2. it is everyones choise whether they want to put it right. Ofc we cant confirm bdays or gender lol. IP we can, if they dont use proxy. Some does put fields right, some are wiseasses. So that goes back to point 1.
3. feel free to share it.
4. no, but as we are a FRIENDLY community and we have script for e.g. bday announcements, so it is nice to let ppl know when someone has a special day. It's not all about gaming with the taste of blood in mouth wink

- what do you mean by icon?
- if someone has issues registering, we have contact info for them, if that's what you mean.

1. Nothing, but there are people who don't want to post it in a forum (privacy, anonymity)
2. From all the infos you get the only thing you really know is the request time.
3. Detect how much time s.b. needs to fill out the registration form (encrypted hidden fields) or asking a question in a captcha, the list is endless
4. Huh, really ? you surprise me (*drink from red glass*) wink

- by icon: display an icon (something like the agree or thanks) next to "Posts", "Joined", ... (look at the left side if you are browsing a topic)
- not really, if you haven't filled these fields out, the site shows you messages saying that you should, I meant that it could also (if s.b. doesn't want this) ask if you want to contact an admin who can grant the user the right the post ("manual activation" )

Hmm well we are a community and like to get to know the people behind the gun smile
The info is not really thát personal (as smirre said). Besides, this is only for if someone wants to post things on the forum. They can still register and receive their level 1, but if they want to participate in the community they'll have to fill in those 4 fields.

Yes, but this is no reason for forcing it.

You can also get to know a person...
... ingame (chat)
... in TS, mumble (more personal)
There is a "New Members" Forum, too.

No there's no reason to force it, but why cant this forum be different from others? Giving out that small amount of information shouldnt be such a big deal. If someone really wanted to be so anonymous, they would only stay on 4chan tongue

But youre the first person to oblige so far smile Maybe more people will agree with you and the admins will have to reconsider this choice wink

I can see your point there, but as i said we are a friendly community where the fun is a part of the spirit. We left the stats (statswhores are annoying and just ruins the fun) from site just to keep the community more friendly. So again i wonder what can be so horrible about typing own bday. We dont care if you're age of -1 or 101 (although ET is for age 13+ and it's bad for you if your under aged mmkay lol) but we care about the ppl who celebrates their bday and we want to participate it by announcing. Again the info you'd type in is up to you whether you put it right or not.

So MY OPINION about getting to know ppl:
ingame chat: we used to do that before, WAY too much imo and in some point i started to feel that i've entered to msn or xfire instead of a game server lol Got more pissed about the bla bla bla....than the getting owned (or infact got owned coz tried to read/write). Ofc chat is maybe the best way to get to know ppl, but when i play, i want to play, not chat all the time. If someone wants to know me more, on my profile is xfire, msn, facebook, twitter visible for that purpose...

I dont judge you who want to talk and play, it is up to everyone how you wanna spend your time on server smile

ts: yes we have it, but ppl seems to be shy around here lol

forums: well lately ppl have introduced themselfs pretty well, i like that smile It hasn't been this active before.

You suggested the captcha, for me it is just a way to make things harder for those who want to register. It's same as you'd win on lottery if you get the code right on first try lol

I'm sure we could go on and on with this, but i leave it here, i've said what i have to say and our staff will discuss how we proceed from here regarding this "privacy" policy. Again i thank you for the feedback, it is good to see that you report about things you feel wrong wink

If u have age -100 that doesn't mean that others will not fill in birthday date correctly - and i'm not gonna now block dates for that reason, because i'm not interested in that and it doesn't bother me, but anyway if this was such a big deal why you didn't choose then also gender like female and china? I understand privacy etc. i know some don't want to fill birthday, atm you have expressed yourself like that, but other 90% active users already had filled birthday and some just came to get level. But now this doesn't mean we have to put it to optional for everyone. Also privacy of profile can be shown only to members. Now those members are players, but you said that its not enough. This is what we have offered so far and I think people are satisfied to now show facebook site to others and so on.

Also like i have said, some sites forces filling in birthdays at registrations some doesn't, I have chosen a way after registration which atm fits us perfectly - those who didn't have entered those fields will have to in order to post.
You have mentioned trackbase and splatterladder, that they do not force it and so on. Like i said we are not connected to trackbase nor splatterladder by anything else than W:ET and anyway you have entered also your country there not only here. And correct me if i'm not right, if you want to register your nickname at trackbase or splatterladder you are forced to choose country right, or eu or worldwide in order to administrate your clan, and since you want to administrate dooc clan, you have decided to give out information to achieve that goal, like its here to achieve posting you will need to enter fields. And did you know that there are more informations outgoing from there than here? That i'm not talking about et slaves which monitors stats and so on. That i'm not talking about sites that tracks you down by guid and so on and on. Here are all that kind of informations shown only to admins. We will not give anything to public what you don't like to be given. Even forum is now locked out and only this part of BH section is able for public view.
Basicly if you don't want that public see your avatar, you can even do that by yourself.

Writing a news or email or pm wouldn't do the trick for regular site users.
We are doing to all users equal, means those who are new will enter it, those who are "old" will enter it. If its fake or it isn't, we cannot know nor we will not be checking it. Its user decision what they will fill in, or that they will fill in in order to post.

And i don't see any problem in this anymore, your age is -1, male, germany, you are able to post. So you even got what u wanted if you ask me.

No there's no reason to force it

That's what the discussion is about.

Smirre
You suggested the captcha, for me it is just a way to make things harder for those who want to register. It's same as you'd win on lottery if you get the code right on first try

Yeah, captcha is quite annoying. I suggested a better one, because there is already one and you had some probs. with bots.

Kwizlord
if this was such a big deal why you didn't choose then also gender like female and china?

Boundaries are different for everybody.

Kwizlord
You have mentioned trackbase and splatterladder, that they do not force it and so on. Like i said we are not connected to trackbase nor splatterladder by anything else than W:ET

I think I mentioned our clan-site as well.

Kwizlord
And correct me if i'm not right, if you want to register your nickname at trackbase or splatterladder you are forced to choose country right, or eu or worldwide in order to administrate your clan, and since you want to administrate dooc clan, you have decided to give out information to achieve that goal, like its here to achieve posting you will need to enter fields

Worldwide doesn't really say very much.

Kwizlord
And did you know that there are more informations outgoing from there than here? That i'm not talking about et slaves which monitors stats and so on. That i'm not talking about sites that tracks you down by guid and so on and on.

What kind of info (I'm interested) ?

Kwizlord

Basicly if you don't want that public see your avatar, you can even do that by yourself.

Registered Users are some sort of public...

Kwizlord
But now this doesn't mean we have to put it to optional for everyone.

Why ? If most users have already filled it out, why do you need it any more ?
By the way: Looks like that I am not the only one, who isn't happy about that...

You probably forgot that the "somebody(s)" can't post without filling something in the fields.
Clark disagreed to Kwizlords last reply and if you look at the profile, you won't see a birthday.

Yes, I have seen that and again this doesn't mean that we will change it anything without discussing about it or finding solutions that would fit us and members. And so far there have not been any suggestion, that would fit us and members but only members only (putting it back to optional). Admin thread about this is allready runing and this one also, but to express yourself you will need to fill birthday or just rate post like u want and at that part we cannot know what you mean with that. Also don't be surprised that those rating will be changed and it is not because of this dissagrees and so on, but we have talked about that some time ago.

i wanna say something about it , its really hard for me understand post sooo big than thats , but i think i can say something about what i could understand . Is trut that many people wont give information about he or her , and if its the first time who logged into is more harder ; but they dont have to do it , im trying to say that is not obligatory put that information! u can log in the site without need to put information u dont wanna give!
For example , right now i now... 3 or 4 names of players xDD

I think that all information must be optional , we dont have to obligate to put info with the person will be not well; thats a great community , when the ppl start to know the members the will put more info smile

If we would put birth date and gender to optional, game name and country will still be mandatory. What you think about that? Simple explanation why those 2 will be mandatory.

Game name - in some next update there will be member list containing that information
Country - like you have noticed, we are using it all over the site, before nicknames

And still we are discussing this in staff section. So to forward this discussion, this is what i think.

I have not put all my true information, as I have had my identity stolen and it creates merry hell and a lot of problems and because of this I do not do so unless it is absolutely necessary. When using the internet and giving personal information like (real) date of birth, name and email address you take the risk of being at risk from Identity fraud. Unfortunately nothing online is 100% secure.
